Chronic pain can significantly contribute to mental health issues such as depression, anxiet
and stress. According to the American Pain Consortium chronic pain can cause feelings of frustration, anger, and sdaness which can then lead to anxiety and depression. There is also an increased risk of developing mental health issues from the stress of having to manage pain. Some ways to manage chronic pain may be:
Practicing stress reduction which can include deep breathing exercises or mindfulness.
Maintaining a healthy and regular sleep schedule.
Engaging in physical exercise under the direction and guidance of a medical doctor or physical therapist.
Eating a healthy and balanced diet.
Engaging in social activities if possible, spending time with family and friends that can service as a support network.
Seeking professional support from your healthcare provider in addition to support from a mental health professional who can help you process any feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, depression, stress, and anxiety
