The holidays can be a joy-filled season spending time with family and friends. But they can also be stressful and challenging especially if you are already dealing with depression and/or anxiety. During the holidays you may have additional obligations with having to schedule family get-togethers and buying gifts and still having to maintain a work schedule and manage your home life. This pressure and added obligations can worse feelings of loneliness and depression. It's Ok to experience a range of emotions during this time, but it is also important to be proactive in prioritizing your emotional well-being. Below are some recommendations to help you plan your own self-care and manage your holiday stress effectively.

  1. Maintain your healthy habits by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, eating well with balanced meals, avoiding excessive alcohol use, and staying physically active.

  2. Schedule self-care time by blocking out time in your day to engage in activities you enjoy in order to relax and rejuvenate you. Some examples might be reading, exercising, or engaging in a creative hobby.

  3. Try to spend some time outdoors if possible since being outdoors in nature can have a naturally calming effect.

  4. Set boundaries with family and friends to avoid overscheduling yourself. Know what your limits are and try to stick to them.

  5. Try to set a budget for gift buying as added expenses during the holidays can only add to your stress.

  6. Seek professional support if needed. If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional for support.
